Enlace and CRS work in an environment that constantly challenges them in their work with youth. Two challenges particularly stand out:

  • High levels of delinquency. This has a direct impact on the project since it makes it difficult for parents to let their children participate in the savings groups.
  • Follow-up. Helping young people stay occupied and motivated, making sure their savings are deposited and remain in the lockboxes, and ensuring that they are not being manipulated by others are all challenging objectives over time.

How are they overcoming these challenges?

  • Working with the adult members of the community, especially with those who are already members of savings and credit groups, to help them understand the importance of inculcating a savings culture, developing entrepreneurial skills, and supporting their children in future business ventures.
  • Establishing alliances with other local organizations that work in the community and are also interested in supporting youth.
  • Conducting mini-workshops that provide young people with some skills while attending the meetings, which can also serve as an incentive for attendance. Some groups are already involved in income-generating activities that will help them increase their savings.
